Website without a CMS: why we build content sites in HTML

Why Izoard builds content sites without a CMS, in HTML and CSS with AI: faster, safer and easier to change. And when a CMS is still the better fit for you.

For a website that is mainly content and forms, a site in HTML and CSS, built with AI, is in our experience better than a CMS on every count. It is faster, safer and easier to change. A CMS still makes sense for web shops, members' areas and editorial teams that publish every day.

That is why, if you come to Izoard for a website built with AI, you don't get WordPress. You get static HTML and CSS, built with AI and reviewed page by page by a senior.

Below you will read why, what it delivers and when we recommend a CMS ourselves.

Why did the CMS become the bottleneck?

A CMS decides what you can change, and that becomes a brake as soon as AI does the work. We see it every month with SEO clients whose website is managed by another party. Their site always runs on a CMS, usually WordPress.

Via MCP, we let Claude put our SEO recommendations straight into those sites. That is better and much faster than manual work in the admin area. How that works, per WordPress version, is covered in SEO via MCP in WordPress.

But for an SME site, the CMS today mainly gets in the way: everything has to pass through the narrow opening that the CMS is. A field the theme does not provide, a block the page builder assembles in its own way, a plugin that writes titles itself: that is where it stops. Let Claude build the page itself, without a CMS, and it has complete freedom.

What does an AI-built site deliver?

The benefit lies in three areas: findability, conversion and technology. Together they form the playbook we apply to every site.

The playbook of an AI-built site, by area
AreaWhat you getWhy it works
SEO and AI searchTitles, headings, canonicals, hreflang and structured data per page, as the briefing asksReady-made HTML; not all bots execute JavaScript [1]
ConversionEvery page built around one goal, with a form or booking link where it fitsA new variant is hours of work, not a ticket
SpeedOnly the code the page needsNo database or page builder; easier to stay within the Core Web Vitals [2]
SecurityNo plugins, no admin area on the serverOf the new vulnerabilities in the WordPress ecosystem in 2025, 91% were in plugins [3]
Maintenance and costCode on GitHub, every version saved, hosting on CloudflareRequests to static files are free and unlimited there [4]

Three points deserve an explanation.

Speed is not a detail. Google calls a page good with an LCP within 2.5 seconds, an INP of 200 milliseconds or less and a CLS of 0.1 or less [2]. A site without a database and page builder reaches that more easily. How to measure it is covered in Core Web Vitals explained.

Conversion and Google Ads are linked. A fast page with one clear goal also helps your ads. Google Ads gives your landing page its own rating within the Quality Score [5]. How that score works is explained by my colleague Benjamin in improving your Google Ads Quality Score.

Changes take minutes. After launch you get your own Custom GPT that knows your site, your copy and your SEO rules. Small changes go online straight away, bigger ones we check first. If something goes wrong, the previous version is back within a few minutes.

Why is your website your most important channel?

In the age of AI, your website is the place where you decide what AI systems read as fact about your company. There are other sources, such as reviews, profiles and mentions in the press. But only on your own site do you decide about your services, prices, service area and who you are.

Google does not ask for separate optimisation for its AI features. It does recommend that important content is on the page as text and that structured data matches the visible text [6].

A site you can change in minutes keeps those facts up to date. A site where every change becomes a ticket falls behind.

In our view, that makes the website your most important marketing channel. Ads and social send people there, and AI answers take part of their facts from it.

When should you still choose a CMS?

A CMS is the better fit as soon as your site is more than pages and forms. That is the case with:

  • a web shop with stock, payments and many products;
  • a members' area or customer portal with logins and permissions;
  • an editorial team that publishes daily with several writers and an approval step, because WordPress has standard roles for that, from contributor to editor [7];
  • features that only exist as a plugin and that you don't want to have built.

We don't build web shops, logins or customer portals; if you need one, we tell you in time. The full comparison of cost, speed and management is in WordPress or a static website.

How do you go about it?

Start from your search data, not from the design. We work in eight steps: keyword research, structure, a briefing per page, building with AI, two feedback rounds, checks and tracking, and then live in your name. The thinking takes the most time; the building itself happens in hours.

All the checklists we use along the way, for SEO, conversion and technology, are in the playbook. It also covers when a CMS is the better choice after all and what you measure after launch.

Not sure whether your current site needs a rebuild, or whether a clean-up will do? The free website scan looks at technology, speed, indexing and your visibility in Google and in AI answers. You get the findings and a conversation, whatever you decide afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is a CMS?

A content management system, such as WordPress or Drupal, is software on the server that builds pages from a database, a theme and extensions, with an admin area for editing text. A site without a CMS consists of ready-made HTML and CSS files that the server passes on straight away.

Why would the CMS disappear?

Because AI removes the reason it exists. A CMS lets people without coding skills edit text. If an AI assistant changes the code for you and a human reviews it, you no longer need that intermediate layer for a content site. For web shops and portals it remains useful.

What if I want a CMS later after all?

That is possible. The content sits in plain HTML files in your name, so you can take everything with you to another system or agency. When you switch, you redirect the old URLs to the new ones, as with any migration.

Is an AI-built site safer than a WordPress site?

The attack surface is smaller: no plugins, no database and no admin area on the server. What you still secure are the accounts around it: domain, DNS, hosting and the place where the code lives. Switch on two-step verification for each of them.
